The Bloomfield Optimist Club was started in Bloomfield in 1968. For over 40 years we have been supporting youth in the community. The following is an excerpt from a letter Gary Shipman had sent out to sponsors highlighting some of our fundraisers and community events we have sponsored or supported.
...Through Optimist International and our local High School we sponsor the Optimist Essay Contest, This contest allows our youth in Grades 9 & 10 to complete in a national Essay Contest, We give out at our club level monetary values for the top four (4) essays each year. First Place is worth $50. Second Place $30.00 Third Place$20.00 and $10.00 for Fourth. We donate $120 to the Trumbull County Educational Service Center for their Civic Day. This allows five (5) high school seniors to shadow a community leader and have a luncheon at DiViestes Banquet Center in Warren.
In 2009 we helped Steven Kobust by sponsoring a bus trip to Washington D.C. for Bloomfield grades 6 – 8 with a $500.00 donation allowing many kids to go who otherwise might not have gone. Working with the American Legion Auxiliary we donate $225.00 to help send one or two local girls to Buckeye Girls State.
Every year our club hands out a $750 dollar Scholarship to one of Bloomfield’s Graduating Seniors. We also donate $250.00 each year to both the Clover Hill Amish School and the Orwell Parochial Amish School. In 2009 we sponsored the Bloomfield Soccer Organization for kids aging from three (3) years to fourteen (14) years of age.
We assisted a local girl going on a mission’s trip to Africa. We sponsor a Seniors (60 years and older) Christmas Dinner in December at the Bloomfield Methodist church for people who live in Bloomfield or have Graduated from Bloomfield to come and have Turkey and dressing and all the trimmings free of charge.
Our Club also works with the High School to repair the Girls Softball field, added diamond dirt to the Boys Baseball field and installed youth soccer fields.
Thank-you again for you support for these and many other opportunities to help our youth.
